Brazil hosts the largest number of freshwater fish species in the world. The count in the Pantanal is 269 species, including a species new to science discovered by the Pantanal Wildlife Program Director of Fish Studies, Dr. Claumir Cesar Muniz.
Many of the fish species found here breed in the many bays and lakes in the research areas on the Paraguay River. These bays and lakes have a fundamental role in the conservation of these communities, and provide the fish used by wildlife, and people.
This program is documenting the species composition, diversity, and richness of fish populations. The Program will work with the Biotic Integrity Index, a scientific tool used to identify and classify water pollution problems.
The Pantanal Wildlife Program is also offering sustainable capacity training for fishing guides, professional and amateur fishermen. We work to try to guarantee the reproduction and production of the fish of the region, as well as all of the flora and fauna dependent of these species
